Man Charged With Shooting After Ballistics Matches Handgun to Bullet

A St. Louis man was charged Friday with a shooting in North County last summer. St. Louis County Police matched a bullet from the shooting with a handgun seized by police in an arrest on Nov. 20.

Derenta Street, 23, of the 1000 block of Hornsby Avenue in St. Louis, was charged with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

St. Louis County Police said a man was sitting in his 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix outside a home July 21, 2012 in the 11900 block of Red Barn Court in North County. The area is east of Black Jack.

Another car pulled up next to him and someone fired two shots into his car, police said. The man was uninjured, and told police he believed Street had fired at him. He told officers had problems with Street.

St. Louis Police later arrested Street Nov. 20 and he was charged with unlawful use of a weapon for carrying a .45 semiautomatic Sturm Ruger. A ballistics lab analysis matched the weapon to a bullet fired in the July 21 shooting, according to a court document.

Street is being held in the St. Louis County Justice Center. Bail was set at $150,000, cash only.

Street was on probation for second-degree robbery and second-degree assault at a Maplewood gas station and for another unlawful use of a weapon charge in Florissant.

He also faces a charge of first-degree tampering as police said he stole a car on June 22, 2012.
