Now Best Buy has joined Yahoo! in banning employees from working from home.
Here at Patch, there is no "here." We all work from home. Or from coffee shops, public libraries, patios, porches and dining rooms—anywhere we can get a wi-fi signal. It keeps us nimble, keeps costs down and let's us work out in the world with the people in the communities we cover. It's a great gig. And not to gloat...but I was in the warmth of my home office working while some of you were fighting traffic during the recent snowstorms. But it's obviously not for everyone. Some people prefer the office environment, the regular interaction face-to-face with coworkers. And in the case of Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo!, she wasn't having it anymore. Keeping one's nose to the grindstone at the home office is a job in itself. In this column, our columnist assesses her own efforts and seeks advice from a work-from-home professional.
Whether you call it working from home or telecommuting, the movement toward setting up shop somewhere other than a traditional office or storefront is catching on. My aunt in Florida is a paralegal who also sells Mary Kay and has a virtual jewelry business. My neighbor deals rare books and documents online. I recently met a public relations professional who also teaches an online class for a local university. There are legions of people running eBay auctions for a living; doing medical billing; providing consulting services in a variety of industries; you name it. The U.S. Census Bureau (American Community Survey 2005-2009) shows that four percent of the labor force works from home at least part of the time; more than 5.5 million people. …

Unless Yahoo has sworn off hiring Indian developers, then Yahoo still does not have all its workers together in the office. Maybe this is an argument against off-shoring and for hiring all American workers who can all be in the office together.   more ›
