A smoking ban isn't the only new ordinance in town, rather the state.
While most Missouri laws go into effect Aug. 28 of the year in which the legislation passed, four new laws went into effect on Jan. 1: HB 1311: Thanks to the House bill 1311, thousands of Missouri kids affected by autism will now be eligible for health insurance coverage for the treatments they need. All group health benefit plans are now required to cover the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders, and coverage will be limited to treatments ordered by qualified physicians that are considered medically necessary. The new law requires that health insurance plans cover up to $40,000 per year for each affected child, and it provides a new licensing requirement for behavior analysts who treat autism. HB1868: In an effort to save…

Stars coach expects great feats for wrestlers.
The McCluer North High wrestling team has set the bar high this season. The Stars finished a credible 19th out of 51 teams at the state meet last winter. They tied Pattonville for the Suburban North Conference crown. All in all, a good campaign — but not a great one. Coach Jake Lapinski wants to see some greatness this go-round. "I expect the guys to come out a little stronger and little tougher," he said. "They've tasted it. They've got a little experience under their belts. Now, it's time for them to perform even better." North, which has won its first three dual matches this season, again appears to be the team to beat in the Suburban North. The Stars have won or shared the league crown 10 of the past 11 seasons. "That's something we're…

Team looks to make their name known statewide and nationwide.
The buzz around McCluer North's campus concerning the Stars basketball team has not only generated interest around the area and state but at the national level as well. The Stars feature a tremendous mixture of highly recruited players, returning standouts and two transfer students who can give McCluer North immediate help. Coach Randy Reed is not shy about describing his team. "This is the best mixture of talent we've ever had since I've been here," said Reed, who is in his 14th season. "We have the potential to win it all. Will we? I don't know, but the talent is there." McCluer North finished at 20-9 last season and lost in the sectional round to Oakville. The Stars won the state title in 2007 and finished second in 2008. North is off …

The cross-town rivalry of McCluer North and Hazelwood Central might only exist in town.
McCluer North and Hazelwood Central High School have been rivals for as long as administrators can remember. And I have known about it since my first year of public school. But the most interesting aspect of the rivalry between the Stars and the Hawks is the fact that it's a "rivalry." I'm not really sure who decided to make the two schools so competitive with each other, but it can be pretty entertaining. Let's look at the football teams, for example. Every time North and Central play each other, parking lots are filled to capacity, bleachers are taken, concessions run out of hotdogs, and school spirit is at an all-time high. But the rivalry is deeper than what happens on a football field. Along the sidelines, the North cheer squad …

With end of football season, Hawks prepare for future with less veterans.
Senior wide receiver/linebacker A.J. Chappelle officially brought one of the most successful eras in Hazelwood Central football to a close late Saturday night. Minutes after the Hawks lost to Kansas City Rockhurst 10-7 in the Class 6 Show-Me Bowl, Chappelle, one of the team's leaders all season, addressed his underclassmen teammates in the bowels of the Edward Jones Dome. "It's your turn now," he said. "We're handing off the torch." The future Hawks will have a difficult time keeping pace with this current senior class. Central won the state title in 2008 and 2009 and was looking to become only the eighth team in history to capture three consecutive titles. The Hawks (13-1) fell short of that goal, but they compiled a 38-3 mark throughout …

Hawks hope to add a 20-game winning streak and three-time state champs to resume.
The Hazelwood Central football team has felt the pressure ever since the first day of practice back in August. And the Hawks have enjoyed every minute of it. Central, the two-time defending Class 6 state champion, revels in the role of the "team to beat." "Every game we play, it's big for the other team because they want to be the ones that say they beat us," said senior running back Tra Brown. "So we get their best effort. We kind of like that." The Hawks (13-0) have one more step in their attempt to a state three-peat. They take on Kansas City's Rockhurst High School (13-0) in the state championship game Saturday at 6:30 p.m. inside the Edward Jones Dome in downtown St. Louis. So far, the Central players have handled the pressure with a…

There's no coincidence that the Hawks have had such a successful run in recent years.
Prize fights, movie premieres and restaurant openings bring out celebrities and legends. You could add any post-season sporting event for the Florissant area, especially when it involves the Hazelwood Central football team. Heading the "A-List" at the Hawks game against DeSmet last weekend was former Hazelwood Central great Tony VanZant. VanZant led the Hawks to the 1985 state title. He finished with 6,138 rushing yards and 91 touchdowns in his high school career. He still looked as if he could play for the Hawks. VanZant is the head coach at Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw, Mich., and he was back home visiting family last weekend. "I try and follow them as much as I can each week," VanZant said. "I get on the Internet and read as much …

I agree that the hawks should be considered s dynasty . It is truly a tradition if winning. I few name that could also be mentioned are Doug Gardner, Craig Raymond, John Doiglas, Earl Williams and Tim Wight and the Demolin family. Most of he names mentioned went on to the next level to play.   more ›
