HSD to Discuss Drop-Out Prevention at Tuesday's Meeting

The Hazelwood School District Board of Education will vote on contracts for windows and storefront replacement, as well as a classroom rental agreement for Special School District of St. Louis County.

The Hazelwood School District (HSD) Board of Education will convene Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., to discuss district business. At it's last meeting, the Board of Education learned of Hazelwood Schools Realizing Operating Budget Surplus. Dwight Lindhorst, assistant superintendent for finance and facilities gave his quarterly budget update in which he attributed an increase of revenue, along with decreased expenditures for taking a  November 2012 budget deficit from $496,000 to a $168,000 operating surplus in the first quarter of 2013. 2013-14 Hazelwood School District Calendar Set

It appears students will begin school on August 12, 2013 and end May 30, 2014.

The Hazelwood School District (HSD) is all set to go for the 2013-2014 calendar year. HSD Board of Education approved the proposed calendar, which Dwight Lindhorst, assistant superintendent for finance and facilities said reflects the same format as this year's calendar. School would start on August 12, 3013. Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for October 24-25. Similar to what occurred this past Thanksgiving observance, break would include the Wednesday before the holiday, and be November 27-29. The last day of first semester would be Dec. 20, with the first day back from winter break being Jan. 6, 2014. Spring Break would be March 24-28. Hazelwood Schools Realizing Operating Budget Surplus

The Hazelwood School District was awarded grants, combined with cost saving methods have put the district in a surplus position, even with added safety measures.

In November, Patch reported on the Hazelwood School District's (HSD) operating budget deficit reducing to $496,000. Prior to that, HSD was dealing with a $2.9 million operating budget deficit going into the 2012-13 school year. During Tuesday's HSD Board of Education meeting, Dwight Lindhorst, assistant superintendent for finance and facilities gave his quarterly budget update. He said the major changes to revenue dealt with incoming grants to the tune of $279,000 combined with a $65,000 financial institution tax balanced out a decrease of $220,000 of transportation revenue  to make the current operating revenue balance $123,000. This is unfortunate. The tax revenue portion. That means HSD will have to dig into reserves or look for grants, but it's dangerous to teach based on grant funds because you are teaching what the grant desires and not what the students need.   more ›

Business Brief: Hazelwood School District

US Treasury to offer Proposition H Bonds Dec. 14.

US Treasury is set to offer the Hazelwood School District's (HSD) Proposition H bonds this week. This would make the school district one step closer to the target goal of construction beginning on the final phase of its Hazelwood 1st facilities upgrades plan, in the spring. HSD Assistant Superintendent of Communications Diana Gulotta said only half of the voter-approved bonds would be put for sale this week. That equates to $60 million, which she said she believes will be sold before the end of 2010. "They [the bonds] go on sale tomorrow [Tuesday]," she said. "Stifel Nicolaus is our bond underwriter." The $60 million of general obligation bonds will be offered with some of the Treasury's other bills on the weekly Tuesday schedule. …
