Hazelwood Central Seniors Get PTA Scholarships

The Hazelwood School District (HSD) PTA Council awarded $50,000 in scholarships to 100 seniors representing Hazelwood West, East and Central high schools this week. The council fund-raises year long to bring in money to the scholarship fund. Most recently, the annual HSD PTA Council Run/Walk was held last Friday. For more than 30 years the outdoor event has raised more than $2.9 million in student scholarships, totalling more than 3,000 scholarships for students. Florissant Man Gets 20 Years in Prison for Bel Ridge Murder

James B. Wilson, 21, of Florissant, pleaded guilty to killing Bryson M. Kelly, 23, in an apartment at 9050 Torchlamp in Bel-Ridge on Jan. 4, 2011.

A man was sentenced Monday to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty for the murder of a Bel-Ridge man in 2011. James B. Wilson, 21, of Florissant, pleaded guilty to killing Bryson M. Kelly, 23, in an apartment at 9050 Torchlamp in Bel-Ridge on Jan. 4, 2011. Circuit Court Judge Richard C. Bresnahan sentenced Wilson to 20 years in prison for each count of second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of armed criminal action. Wilson also was charged to 15 years for each count of shooting a weapon at a home or from a vehicle and a second count of armed criminal action. All sentences will run concurrently. A second man, Jamon Spurlock, 20, of the 7000 block of Lauphner in Hazelwood, originally was charged with murder in the case…

North County Cancer Cluster Dispute Heats Up at Radioactive Waste Meeting

A MO Department of Health and Senior Services employee admits her department does not have the means to execute a true and effective survey to determine a NoCo cancer cluster.

The James J. Eagan Community Center played host to a room of people who said they aren't giving up or backing down, Thursday night. "The federal government has poisoned us and it's their responsibility to take care of us," Kim Thone Visintine, who grew up in the area, said. She along with other North County residents, past and current, filled the gymnasium to listen to governmental agencies update remediation and other efforts related to radioactive waste dumped in the area and spread through Coldwater Creek, as well as groundwater. Some of those in attendance no longer live in the area. Visintine drove from Detroit, Mich., to be at the meeting. The defining moment of the meeting was when Cherri Bysinger spoke. Tornado Updates

Tornado Caused more than $4 Million in Damage to Florissant, Hazelwood

The St. Louis County Assessor's Office says preliminary numbers show the tornado that ripped through Hazelwood and Florissant caused about $4 million in damage to residential property.

St. Louis County Assessor Jake Zimmerman and his team were in Florissant and Hazelwood last week assessing damage from the April 10 tornado that ripped through the area. He said he now can confirm about $4 million in damage from the tornado to residential property alone. "This doesn't include commercial property," Zimmerman said. "It looks like there is about $3.5 million in uninhabitable property, and about $500,000 of moderate damage to other property." St. Louis Oversight Committee Hosts Nuclear Contamination Update Meeting Thursday

Residents will learn about remediation efforts related to Coldwater Creek, and all of the areas in and near Florissant that comprise the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program.

If you are looking to be updated on what is going on with remediation efforts at areas of North County contaminated with nuclear and radioactive wastes, you'll want to be at the James J. Eagan Community Center Thursday night. The St. Louis Oversight Committee will host its semi-annual meeting which allows residents in the area to speak face-to-face with people involved with the cleanup process at areas including in Hazelwood, with Coldwater Creek, as well as at and around Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. Hazelwood School District Cancels ‘Spring Into Employment’ Job Fair

There will not be a job fair on Thursday at Hazelwood East Middle School.

The Hazelwood School District will not be hosting its “Spring into Employment” job fair on Thursday as originally planned.  Kimberly McKenzie, HSD community relations and communication specialist, sent out the cancellation announcement early Tuesday morning. "There was limited participation," she said. " It will be revised for next year." The district did host the first two sessions of the three part employment event on April 4 and April 18. The sessions taught job seekers about résumé building, applying for applications, how to interview for a job and job skills. The event took place at Hazelwood East Middle School but McKenzie said next year will be a bit different. "We are looking to change the location and make it an off-site event," …
