Florissant Man Dies in Home Explosion He May Have Caused (Fox 2 Video)

The home exploded around 3 a.m. Sunday morning. Police now believe the man could have started the fire himself. Plus: what one neighbor told Patch the suicide note said.

Updated 12:14 a.m. to include information from neighbors, including what the suicide note allegedly said. One man is dead as the result of a house explosion he might’ve caused himself, Fox 2 reports. Firefighters found the body of 52-year-old Kirk Sayles as they put out a fire at 22 Flowerdige Ln. A suicide note was also discovered in Sayles’ vehicle. Just before 3 a.m. on Sunday, neighbors reported hearing explosions at the home. They told Fox 2 that Sayles typically kept to himself, and that the explosion shook their homes. "My daughter and I heard it at around 2 or 3 this morning," Theresa Ross posted on Florissant Patch's Facebook page. "We thought it was a big firework or a transformer blowing." Gosh... looks as if we need an instant background check before we can have our home connected to the gas mains! Was his home connected to a high-capacity gas main? This wasn't the same sort of cooking gas used in the military was it? I definitely think everyone whose home is connected to gas lines must be induced to register with their childrens' school!!!   more ›

Florissant Police Blotter

We've got two weeks worth of crimes to catch readers up on.

Sept. 1 Police responded to a second-degree burglary in the 1300 block of Paddock Drive. Police didn’t discover any forced entry, but a flat screen TV was stolen. Sept. 2 A second-degree burglary took place in the 2300 block of Mullanphy. Police discovered the rear door forced open and jewelry and coins had been taken. Sept. 3 Police responded to a second-degree burglary of a business in the 700 block of North Highway 67. Thieves entered by breaking the glass of a garage door. Tools and cash were stolen. Sept. 5 A home in the 900 block of Robinwood caught fire after the resident placed ashes from a barbecue pit in the trash. According to the police report, the damage was extensive.
