What would you like to see come to town or be built in town? Vote below in our poll or comment and let us know what you would like to see come in town.

I agree completely. I wouldn't quash the dreams of someone trying to open a business, but come on. Let's get real, how many of these places can possibly be crammed into an area? This reminds me of when everyone was selling cell phone accessories on every corner. Too many pay day loans around here, also. The businesses going in have the potential to bring people the area that may not otherwise …   more ›

Why buy anywhere else? Dooley's is excellent and we're also supporting our local vendors. It's a win-win situation as far as I'm concerned!!   more ›

Merrily Married

Shopping for the Husband's Holiday

The first Christmas holiday as a married couple should be special, and we hope to make the most of it.

Christmas shopping has been a bit of a beast this year. It’s required a bit more thinking and creativity to celebrate our first Christmas as a married couple together. I want it to be truly special and memorable, and I hoped to give him a special gift to commemorate the holiday season spirit. That seems to be a taller task than I had imagined. In past years, we’ve given each other a list and a budget that we would stay within. This year, we exchanged lists, but we didn’t set a budget, and we each had our own ideas of something else we wanted in addition to the lists. We entered dangerous territory on that one. In past years, I’ve gotten him wallets, clothes, a valet tote—to place his constantly forgotten keys, wallet and cellphone and …

A Closer Look at Florissant Office Spaces

"Florissant Patch" dives into researching the lack of office towers in North County.

In recent months, Florissant Patch has examined our community in the context of business. One of the angles we decided to explore was the lack of high-rise towers in the North County, more specifically, Florissant area. More commonly known for its retail and restaurant offerings, Florissant has deep business roots along with an active chamber of commerce. Therefore, it seemed peculiar that we wouldn’t have more business towers or offices in our community. For the past couple of months, we’ve called, researched and interviewed officials and experts in real estate regarding Florissant as a business hub, and we’re presenting a three-part series that we’ve titled, “Florissant Office Spaces.” In the series, we’ll explore the necessary …

Local Family-Owned Business Still Going Strong After More Than 50 Years

The granddaughter of John Goeke, founder of Goeke Produce, sat down with "Florissant Patch" to share memories of her grandfather and the latest news on the historic family business.

John Goeke’s granddaughter Tricia Stout has fond memories of spending time at the Goeke Produce store in Old Town Florissant during her childhood. “When we were there, we knew we had to work,” Stout said. “Grandpa was one of the people I idolized in my life, and you knew he wouldn’t let you just sit around.” Stout said she remembers that she and several of her cousins would go to the store and put up bananas, peel onions and do other tasks assigned by Goeke. Since Goeke died nearly 10 years ago, Stout said her mother Karen Ormsby now runs the store, along with Ormsby’s sister Lynne Combest and two other sisters. She said the sisters took over the store about five years before Goeke died, when he officially retired. Stout told Florissant …

Goeke's is indeed a wonderful store, but I think that you should also have mentioned Denny Thielmeier, who has spent 30+ years helping to make Goeke's what it is today.   more ›

Election 2011

Down to Business: Florissant Council Candidates Respond to Your Questions

The candidates answered questions about the relations between councilors and administration.

What should Florissant do to attract more high-level commercial businesses? Mark Behlmann, Ward 3: The City of Florissant has a stigma hanging over it. The perception related to businesses coming into the city is negative. This perception is due to the uncertainty of its previous and current leadership. This perception needs to be changed starting with the city council's ability to work together. Communication and hard work within the council itself starts the healing process. Joe Eagan, Ward 3: All cities throughout the nation have experienced tough times due to the recession. This recession is one of the worst economic periods that this country has ever endured. This recession has had a devastating effect on many of our lives. Many have …

Replacing the current Economic Developer with someone who has the knowledge and the personality to attract new businesses is what is needed. How many small businesses such as restaurants, retail shops and the ever growing number of daycare centers come to Florissant with good intentions to start and grow their business. But most restaurants and retail fail due to lack of cooperation from the …   more ›
