Race for Ward 3 Heats Up with Anonymous Accusations

An unsigned letter mailed to voters targets candidate Joe Eagan, and Eagan responds.

It’s been a long election season in Florissant, and the race for Ward 3 took an ugly turn in the days leading up to Aug. 2. Last week, all registered voters in Ward 3 received an anonymous letter in the mail regarding comments against candidate Joe Eagan. As editor of Florissant Patch, I decided to bring this shadowy activity into the light. The letter touched on a number of issues about Eagan, including his role in the annexation of Crest Aire starting in 1992, the city charter review and how Eagan has run his campaign.    Following the letter’s release, Eagan contacted Florissant Patch to tell me about it. He also provided responses to the letter writer, whose identity remains unknown.  Addressing Annexation The anonymous letter writer …

I truly enjoyed all my talks with Joe during as we met each other going door-to-door around the neighborhoods. I promised Joe I would run a clean campaign, we shook on it, and I am a woman of my word. This is one reason why I was so surprised by the personal attack last Saturday, an attack that hurt my family. I have have been told by many Eagan supporters that they didn't think I was responsible…   more ›

Charter Review: Council Candidates Answer Your Questions

“Florissant Patch” asked Ward 3 and Ward 6 council candidates questions on residents’ behalf, and here’s what they had to say.

A few weeks ago, we asked for residents to submit burning questions they had for council candidates, and you responded. We asked the candidates more than 20 questions regarding handling residents' calls, budget, charter review and more. Although we have a single question listed here, there are several more to come in our series. We’ll continue to run candidates’ responses leading up to the Aug. 2 election. For the first question, and the most popular question, you asked:   Are you in favor of a charter review? Mark Behlmann, Ward 3 Candidate: Yes, absolutely. I made a presentation at the city council meeting Monday, July 11 publicly announcing my thoughts, procedures, and listing my many reasons. In order to be fully transparent, there is …

While I see where Mr. Eagan is coming from in his April, 2010 letter stating his reasons for opposing the charter review, the current rational is less clear to me due to what looks to me like a filibuster staged by Mayor Schneider and two other council members. Furthermore, Mr. Eagan’s statement that the charter review is not an important issue for the 600 doorsteps that he visited is not in line…   more ›

Three's Not a Crowd

The Ward 3 Council candidates have varying backgrounds but run simple, clean campaigns.

Although the Ward 3 candidates have different backgrounds and reasons for entering the special election race, each has taken a similar route in hitting the ground and speaking to residents of Ward 3. With two months until the Aug. 2 election in which Florissant will decide its Ward 3 and Ward 6 representatives, Mark Behlmann, Joe Eagan and Elizabeth O’Fallon have hit the ground running. Although one candidate has familiarity in the political arena and the other two remain new to the scene, Florissant Patch took some time to catch up with each one in the midst of the campaign trail. Back on the campaign trail Mayor Tom Schneider defeated Behlmann in the April 5 municipal election, but it didn’t take long for Behlmann to rebound and look at …

Three Filed for Ward 3 Council Seat

Currently, it appears that three will vie for the vacant council seat on Aug. 2.

The No. 3 seems to be symbolic for the City of Florissant, as three people filed for the Ward 3 City Council seat at the close of filing on Tuesday evening. Mark Behlmann, Joseph Eagan and Elizabeth O’Fallon have turned in their nomination petition packets to the city clerk’s office to vie for the seat. Mayor Tom Schneider vacated the seat last month following his mayoral win. City Clerk Karen Goodwin said that all have submitted their filing paperwork, but they would not be official candidates until their petition packets have been certified.  Once certified, the candidates will campaign for the Aug. 2 election where the seat would be filled. Also on the ballot will be the Ward 6 runoff race between Steve Purgahn and Pat Stinnett, who …

I have known Elizabeth since she was 12. She is in "my" Top Ten as far as being so well-rounded in her "in-depth" awareness and knowledge of the local, state, federal, and world issues. Her desire to learn, and continue to learn, is the perfect role model a teacher like myself cherishes. Whenever we communicate and debate on a variety of issues, she consistantly supports her position with "…   more ›
