Custodian Caught Cleaning Out Middle School Safe of Nearly $2,300, Police Say

A school custodian at Hazelwood North Middle School is accused of stealing $2,279 from a safe in the school’s office over a two-month period. Stephen Anthony, 25, of the 100 block of Fermo Avenue in Ferguson, was charged May 7 with felony stealing. School officials discovered numerous thefts from the safe in the middle school at 4420 Vaile Avenue beginning in December. A school resource officer installed a clandestine camera in the office to catch the thefts on video. On Feb. 25, the camera recorded Anthony removing cash from the safe, St. Louis County Police said.
