Last school year, I witnessed a HORRIBLE fight where 3 girls were jumping on one punching, screaming, etc. Another man who was driving by and myself stopped to help the victim and called police. Hopefully the extra patrols make bullys weary about attacking kids at bus stops and on their …   more ›

Survival Guide for New High School Freshmen (and Their Parents)

"Patch" offers tips and ideas for teens and parents as they prepare for the first day of high school.

If your teen is gearing up to start his or her freshman year in high school, you’ll be glad to know that while you're both in for some big changes, you will both survive--and ideally, you'll be better for it in the end. Last year, when my oldest son started his high school journey, I was afraid that he’d be too overwhelmed by the maze of hallways on the school's large campus, the variety and location of his classes and the mix of older, adult-sized students he’d be dealing with each day. The good news is that we’ve both survived this far, and so will you. Here are a few tips I learned along the way that might make that transition a little easier for all involved. We're letting you know this year's requirements for school vaccinations.

As the start of the new school year nears, local parents are getting their kids ready for the next leg of their educational journey. Along with making sure they've got all the school supplies they'll need, parents have to ensure their students are properly vaccinated for the upcoming school year. According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, a child who is beginning kindergarten must have all vaccinations required by the department's schedule. The department also states that current students must be "in progress" and have an “Immunization in-progress form, which includes the appointment date for needed immunizations, on file and must receive immunizations as soon as they become due.” Medical or Religious Exceptions …
