Ferguson Man Indicted in North County Murder

St. Louis County Police said Hosie Taylor strangled and beat a woman Oct. 12 in her Spanish Lake home.

A Ferguson man was indicted Wednesday for first-degree murder and first-degree arson in the death of a Spanish Lake woman Oct. 12. St. Louis County Police said Hosie Taylor, 36, killed Deidre Exum, 51, by striking and strangling her in Exum's home in the 6600 block of Chesapeake Drive in Spanish Lake. Taylor then set fire to her condominium, St. Louis County prosecutors said. A probable cause statement indicated Exum “suffered serious physical injury” as a result of the fire. Exum died due to asphyxiation and blunt force trauma, according to a police report. A witness saw Taylor leaving Exum’s condominium about the time the fire started. Florissant Teen Sentenced for Setting Several Vehicle Fires Near His Home

A Florissant teen was sentenced for setting fire to several vehicles near his home last spring, according to a report from KSDK. Khadeem Ratcliff pled guilty to four counts of “knowingly burning” in October. The 18-year-old was sentenced to five years of supervised probation, and Judge David Lee Vincent also informed him that he would be responsible for restitution to the owners of the vehicles. Ratcliff was also ordered to attend regular mental evaluations, maintain full-time employment and to completely avoid contact with the victims. Update: Man Damaged Cameras Before Torching Ex-Girlfriend's Home, Police Say

The homeowner had gotten an order of protection against the man, who is her ex-boyfriend.

A Black Jack man faces several criminal charges after police setting fire to his ex-girlfriend’s home in unincorporated North County. Harvey Jones, 30, of Nordell Court in Black Jack, was charged Tuesday with first-degree arson, violating a protection order, and second-degree property damage. St. Louis County Police said Jones pulled four closed-circuit video cameras down from exterior walls on the woman’s home in the 2100 block of Thunderbird Avenue. Police said the cameras did capture Jones on the property, and then several cameras are damaged and stop working.  Video shows Jones leaving the property as smoke begins to appear, police said. Teen Charged with Setting Vehicle Fires in Paddock Hills

Three of the fires were set last week, and all were set in the same subdivision.

An 18-year-old man was charged Thursday with setting fire to three vehicles and a clothing storage box in Florissant's Paddock Hills subdivision. Khadeem Ratcliff, who also lives in the Paddock Hills subdivision, faces four counts of knowingly burning or exploding, class D felonies, in St. Louis County Circuit Court. In a court document, Florissant Police said Ratcliff set fire to: Police said in the report that Ratcliff admitted setting the fires. Bond was set at $20,000.

As the summer heats up, so do some local crimes.

June 1 Police responded to the report of a case of arson in the first block of Florval Dr. A small fire had been intentionally set in the back of the residence. The resident called police after discovering it. No suspects have been named. Another case of arson was reported in St. Ferdinand Park after the playground equipment near the lake had been destroyed by fire. Florissant police said the investigation is ongoing and have no evidence at the time that the two incidents of arson had any relation.   June 6  Police responded to a second-degree burglary in the 900 block of Marrisa Dr. The rear door of the residence was forced open, and money and jewelry were taken. Florissant Police Blotter

A burglary and a case of arson make the cut for this week's crimes.

April 28 Police responded to the report of a second-degree burglary in the 500 block of Myrtle. Police discovered criminals stole copper pipes as well as the copper metal from an air conditioning unit.  Police have not identified any possible suspects. April 29 Police and the fire department responded to a fire at 2500 Stirrup. Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that a pickup truck and boat had been set on fire. The case remains under investigation.

Crime Rates Down in 2010

Compared to 2009, crime in the Florissant continued to fall.

The City of Florissant saw overall crime rates drop throughout 2010, which is a continued trend from 2009. In a Jan. 7 press release, Mayor Robert Lowery’s office reported a “considerable major reduction of crime in almost every area.” He praised not only the Florissant Police Department for their contributions, but also Florissant’s Neighborhood Watch Program members. Mayor Lowery stated that it was their efforts that were helping to make Florissant a safer environment. “Although we are not without crime, we are steadily reducing it by being aggressive but making certain we abide by the Constitution,” Mayor Lowery said in the release. “We will not tolerate criminal activities, and we will attack it in every way possible, once again in …
