The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.

It's about time. In my opinion the affirmative action ruling has destroyed the higher educationRead More system in this country, A college diploma is not worth the paper it's written on any longer. In the old days the cream was allowed to raise to the top as the saying goes and that way you insured that you had the best. That is what made this country and its educational system so good. Eventually the minorities would have been part of that cream and would become the best of the best.

2 observations: race in my opinion is not a disadvantage. poverty is. and poverty affects people ofRead More all colors--so colleges can take into account challenges in life--but being the son of michael jordan shouldnt grant him an easier admissions process simply because of skin pigmentation. 2) people also need to understand that the system in place does in fact result in diversity that we should all want. New Yrk Times about a year ago ran an article on peter stuyvesant high school--an elite school in manhattan that changed it admission policy to strictly merit. the result was 1 black student 95% asian. 1% hispanic 3 % white. Im not really sure that is a desirable outcome either. going to college is not just about attending bio 101. its interacting with a diverse student body that can also be considered an education. Colleges should not in my opinion adopt a strict meritocratic admissions process--- hardship , poverty, challenges should be considered. I get why people dont want racial preferences-- but i also get why people may regret what they wished for.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.

Susan Harris - You make good points a very very large percentage, nearly all, of CCSS supportersRead More speak about how high the standards are, how important it is to prepare the kids for college and career (the Gov. stopped using global career ready). This all sounds so good but I feel, the state Boe, the local BOE, the communities and the parents must know A-Z. Lets pretend the standards are right on the money, they are perfect, remember I'm pretending. Do you accept that the CCSS are copyright by a corporation and no, absolutely no state or district can deviate from them? Does it matter that corporate America is behind the whole CCSS? Does it matter to you that the kid's data (every piece of information) collected during a child's 12-15 years in school are maintained and sold without approval from parents or child? Are you ok with the claim from every Gov. level that states were part of developing the standards and this is far from the truth? Do you wonder why so many corporations are spending millions of dollars on the implementation of the CCSS. Are you concerned that next year, in CT., the Fed. Money is all dried up for CCSS and moving forward is all on the state and district? Are you at all concerned about the U.S. History books, in line with CCSS, are so anti United States and Pro Global. CCSS Are the standards and all the new text books are in line with CCSS, I'd say the curriculum is CCSS. Do you know the stress the teachers are under to get the kids to pass all the CCSS test? The teachers are coached and supported (unofficially) to teach to the test, "everyone wins when the kids pass the test". I'll add, Gov. Malloy is proud to say, if teaching to the test raises the kids test scores so be it". Corporate America is behind the wheel on this machine and it must be stopped. So again pretending the CCSS are OMG good. It's a whole package you just can't take a piece and forget about the rest. I could go on forever but these are the few pennies of the 100s I have to offer. I feel every documents and the front page of all CCSS should read - WARNING: PARENTS NOT ALLOWED PASS THIS POINT, YOUR KIDS ARE NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS..........
Lee Jacobsen April 23, 2014 at 03:03 am
Common Core makes sense, and ensures that the teachers are teaching our kids something besides theirRead More conception of what education really is. Standardized scores are the only way to determine if the students are learning anything. In Detroit, we pay the teachers 500 dollars a day, and achieve a 10 percent graduation rate, kids can make more money off of the welfare system rather than stay in school . At least with standardized tests, we can see where the problems are, what we are learning , and what is not learned. A good idea would be to do what the rest of the world has been doing for decades, go to a year round school year, the kids are not needed for the harvest in the summers anymore.

Funny how Netflix is the "bad boy" yet those that offer more commercials than the movieRead More itself are just fine :) Cable today is pure garbage, a 2 hr movie will last half the night with all those commercials and since all sports from all countries, could be seen live over the internet...cable is obsolete. Netflix is weak but is a fine alternative to cable for now. (as for news, please, you must be brain-dead to get your news from cable...with all of them all over you from second you start the computer to turn on the radio to even the second you "check" the e-mail on the phone. so Reuters don't worry about Netflix, worry about cable companies whose stocks should be worth a little more than half an ounce of dirt

Dorie, stowing away on a plane is a crime. And no, the boy himself did not pose a threat. But theRead More fact that he (anyone) can get that close to a plane poses a threat. I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. Those responsible should be ripped apart by dogs. I sincerely hope the families of those affected can move on somehow. But how does Mary Jane Smith running the marathon help ANYBODY but herself? She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't. There’s actually nothing surprising about Twitter parodists being viciously tracked down byRead More the police, because if we don’t speak up for everybody’s rights, we better be ready for our own rights to be trampled on when we least expect it. It starts with criminalizing deadpan satire in the form of “Gmail confessions” intended to embarrass or “injure” a well-connected academic department chairman, and from there it moves to criminalizing Twitter parodies intended to “injure” a city mayor. See the documentation of America’s leading criminal-satire case at: http://raphaelgolbtrial.wordpress.com/ and consider, in particular, the NACDL’s statement that if certain individuals “feel aggrieved by online speech with academic value, they have remedies in tort,” rather than in criminal courts. http://raphaelgolbtrial.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/raphael-golb-amicus-brief.pdf Note, incidentally, that the Peoria chief of police “said the intent of the account was not clearly satirical. 'I don’t agree it was obvious, and in fact it appears that someone went to great lengths to make it appear it was actually from the mayor,' he said.” This argument was first employed precisely in the New York “Gmail confession” case. That case, despite being widely reported on in the press, has been largely ignored by legal commentators, so it’s not at all surprising that the police now feel free to go after the creators of satirical Twitter accounts embarrassing to wealthy and powerful members of the community, whether they be politicians, university presidents, or anyone else ordinary people might choose to mimic and mock on the Internet.

For those of you observantly too clueless, Citrus County is 95.05% white, votes Republican in local,Read More state and national elections. Presently, Republicans hold all seats on the Citrus County Commission. In addition, the per capita income for the county is listed at $18,585. So what you're saying william is that anyone who comes along and claims "PTSD",Read More "ABUSE", blah, blah blah should get a free pass? Why have laws then? The whole concept of making something a criminal act is that we want to discourage it from happening in the first place, by putting deterrents into effect. One such deterrent is PRISON, another is the Death Penalty. If this person was being abused, she had options BEFORE coming to this point - for whatever reason, she make a decision to kill someone, and a Jury of her peers determined her guilt. So off to jail she goes - hopefully FOREVER.
