The reason behind a drive for a 3rd party

While reading a comment [http://www.khanacademy.org/science/healthcare-and-medicine/health-care-system/v/healthcare-system-overview] on the Khan Academy website, it became evident why a two party system does not work for the common people.  We have seen that groups with uncommon ideas how government should work have poured money into advertising for political men.  This change now requires common people to spend more money on election campaigns.   Money wasted on trying to influence people; not to hire people.

Getting back to the subject, a 3rd party is needed to stop the only choices of: right vs wrong, left vs right or rich vs poor.   The losing party does not try to compromise on what is best for America, but they use every dirty trick possible to get back into power (regardless of the effect on the middle class).  The middle class has only one option because in a two party system, picking an independent party is like throwing your vote away.  So our only option is to pick the one party that will do less harm.

I got the 3rd party idea from the comment below, where the writer says it better than I can with his responds to a question on our failed healthcare system.

“From my perspective as a non-american, I would say the answer to your question has deep roots in the two party system, which encourages ideological polarization. Parties pour a lot of resources and energy into shaping the American identity (and reshaping history) to their own advantage, so that making reasonable political changes is difficult. The changes are always shot down as being "unAmerican" or against the free-market approach that "made us the greatest county in the world". The healthcare problem is no different, in this sense, than the deficit reduction or unemployment insurance problems, etc, etc. There are seriously broken aspects to America and the sensible solutions to these problems are being hijacked by extremists on either side of the ideological spectrum.  Add a third political party and I bet you'll begin to see a more rational political consciousness in America going forward.  So to recap: Why do american's allow the albatross to take them down?  Because the political parties have manipulated an ill-informed voting public into two divisive groups that will never agree on any sensible fix to the the health care problem. (full disclosure: I think the DEms are more centrist and sensible than the GOP)”

My suggestion would be to rally around the most popular independent party.  However, according to Wiki, there are 26 independent parties.

Most are linked to a state, but many are named Green and other names include: socialist, reform, progressive, working family, justice, natural law, peace & freedom, etc, etc.   All of these party names sound good, but can we get them to unite?
