St. Louis Community College Builds Stronger Family Bonds

For the second consecutive year, the school hosts Parent Child Academy.

Families will have an opportunity to grow even closer when the David L. Underwood Library of St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley and Ferguson Public Library host the 2013 Parent Child Academy.

The four-week program will host its kick-off at Ferguson Public Library, July 27 at 10:30 a.m. The basis of the program is simple--enriching reading and healthier eating habits for families. This is the second year St. Louis Community College has hosted the program, but the first year for the partnership.

“We’re very excited to once again offer these fun interactive classes to the parents and children of the area,” Senior Manager of Library and Instructional Resources John Furlong wrote. “The opportunity for parents and children to learn together the benefits of reading and healthy eating is very unique.  We’re also very happy to partner with the Ferguson Public Library and St Louis Storyteller of the Year (2011) Karen Moore for the first time. Their involvement in the Academy only strengthens the programs offered.”

Following the kick-off event, parents and children will spend the other three sessions interacting through art, reading and cooking, with an emphasis on parents learnign about ways to enrich family story and dinner times, according to the program description.

“We hope that parents and children take away from the Academy new ideas on family story and dinner time activities,” Furlong wrote. “The activities will strengthen family bonds while helping the children experience the joys of reading and learning.”
