Suburban North Conference Wrap: McCluer North Softball Continues Winning Ways

The Stars are in a hot streak in football, softball.

The Pattonville High School softball team has had its share of ups and downs this season.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, there have been too many downs.

"We just aren't playing consistently," coach Doug McGhee said. "There are games where we really look good. Then we'll look bad the next time."

Still, the Pirates are capable of turning in a strong effort at any time. That gives McGhee and his players high hopes for the post season.

"I think we can win our district if we're playing like we're capable of playing," he said.

Pattonville will compete in the Class 4 District 6 Tournament at next month along with , Hazelwood West, Hazelwood East, McCluer, McCluer North and Riverview Gardens.

The Pirates (6-7 overall, 2-3 in league play) are led by senior infielder Mikala McGhee, who is hitting .500. Kristen Hanna (.417) has 13 RBIs. Pitcher Skyler Rodgers (4-2, 2.47 ERA) has shown flashes of brilliance.

Stars softball team remains red hot

McCluer North (12-4, 4-0) beat Kirkwood 5-3 on Friday for its sixth win in a row. Senior pitcher Rachel Franck threw five successive shutouts during the run.

Tynai Burrow leads the attack with a team-high 25 RBIs.

Hazelwood West (9-9, 5-1) has won five of its last seven, including an 11-10 win over St. Charles on Saturday.

The Wildcats scored six runs in the sixth to put the game away. Danielle Drone led the attack with four RBIs. Emily Rousseau added three hits.

Hazelwood Central (3-9, 3-3) won two consecutive games in a big way last week. The Hawks crushed Riverview Gardens 20-4 on Tuesday and Hazelwood East 15-2 on Thursday.

McCluer (2-13, 1-4) beat Normandy 18-0 on Friday.

Game of the week

McCluer North takes on Hazelwood West in a key Suburban North Conference showdown on Tuesday at North. The Stars lead West by a game on the loss side in the league race.

The teams will wear pink uniforms in honor of cancer awareness.

McCluer North wins in football again

The Stars (4-1, 2-0) won their fourth game in a row by blasting Farmington 45-17 on Friday night.

Antwaun Williams led the way with 188 yards rushing on 20 carries. Quarterback Galen Brown hit on eight of 13 passes for 157 yards and three scores.

North rolled out to a 28-0 lead in the first half and never looked back.

The Stars have outscored the opposition 135-45 on the four-game run, which came following a 39-7 loss to Jefferson City on Opening Day.

Hazelwood West (1-4, 1-1) won for the first time after four consecutive losses to open the season. The Wildcats downed Riverview Gardens 28-14 on Saturday. T.J. Dominick ran for a pair of second half scores to break a 14-14 tie.

McCluer (1-4, 1-2) also broke a four-game losing streak with a 32-20 win over Pattonville (1-4, 1-4) at Lindenwood University. Jeff Shumpert highlighted the triumph with a 90-yard kickoff return.

Hazelwood Central (1-4, 1-1) lost at Hazelwood East 36-18 on Saturday.

West and Pattonville stay undefeated in volleyball

The Wildcats (8-5, 3-0) beat Hazelwood East 25-6, 25-4 on Wednesday for their third win in a row.

Sara Gregor led the way with 17 service points, 15 aces and five kills.

Pattonville (6-9-1, 3-0) used a balanced attack to beat McCluer (7-4, 2-1) on Wednesday. Madi Maguire led the 25-9, 25-16 win with 10 assists. Samantha Callahan added four kills.

Hazelwood Central (1-9, 1-2) beat McCluer North 25-23, 25-19 for its first win of the season on Wednesday.

North (1-8, 1-2) has lost 16 of 19 games.

West soccer continues its run

The Wildcats (9-3, 1-0) beat Hazelwood Central 5-0 on Saturday.

Jeff Cameron, Jamie Lawrence and Joe Withington each scored for West. Keeper Nick Ehlers earned his seventh shutout.

Central (1-6-2, 0-1) has been outscored 32-9 this season.

Pattonville (3-4, 1-0) beat Francis Howell North 3-1 on Friday. B.J. Dryer, Elliot Greene and Rob O'Keefe scored for the winners.

McCluer (4-7, 0-0) used five second-half goals to down Barat Academy 6-3 on Friday.

McCluer North (1-8-2, 0-1) continues to struggle after a season-opening 1-0 win over Collinsville.

Pirates girls golf team wins

Pattonville downed McCluer North 238-265 in a dual match on Tuesday.

Nikki Callahan took medalist honors for the Pirates.

Athlete of the week

McCluer North softball pitcher threw five successive shutouts to help lead the Stars on a six-game winning streak.
