Notebook: Hazelwood Central's Harsley Shines at District Golf Tourney

Hazelwood Central qualifies three golfers, and McCluer North two, for the state sectional meet.

The golf team placed fifth out of nine teams in this past Wednesday’s Class 4 District 3 tournament at The Missouri Bluffs Golf Club in St. Charles, MO. The Hawks had a team score of 366, which was 11 strokes behind fourth-place Pattonville, but 57 shots behind district champion De Smet.

Hazelwood Central qualified three golfers for Wednesday’s state sectionals at Old Hickory Golf Course in St. Peter’s, MO. Gerald Harsley shot an 81 to pace the Hawks and finish ninth overall. Cedric Portis shot a 90 to place 21st and Donovan Bates shot a 92.

Hazelwood Central track won the Orange Division at the annual Clayton track meet on Saturday with 132 points.

The Suburban North Conference held its league tennis tournament this past Saturday. In the No. 1 singles final, Hazelwood Central's Steven Benedict defeated McCluer North's Josh Papes, 6-1, 6-2. Papes had beaten Benedict in the 2010 district final, too.

The golf team shot a 376 to finish sixth in the Class 4 District 3 tournament. The Stars had two golfers qualify for sectionals, including Willnard Anderson who placed 19th with a score of 88. Michael Wells shot a 93, and Zach Schulz shot a 94, missing the sectional-qualifying cutoff by a single stroke.

The Stars girls soccer team has lost just one match in the past three weeks, going 4-1, including a few postponed matches. McCluer North defeated Ritenour, 3-0, this past Thursday and also beat a solid 10-4 Orchard Farm team, 3-2, last Friday. The Stars (6-8) are 3-2 in the Suburban North but trail first-place Pattonville (3-0).

Senior defender Miranda Graham leads the Stars this season with six goals.

McCluer girls soccer is 5-6, including a 2-2 league mark in the Suburban North. The Comets have won their past three games by a combined score of 17-0 as junior goalkeeper Alexis Armstead has been reliable in net for coach Gary Earney.

Senior defender Kelly Kennealy has a team-high eight goals, followed by junior midfielder Marquayla Dixon with seven.
