Notebook: Hazelwood Central Baseball Poised For League Showdown

Hazelwood Central baseball will bring a 7-1 record into its home game against Pattonville.

Despite occasional offensive struggles, Hazelwood Central baseball will bring a 7-1 record into its home game against Pattonville on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. The showdown will feature the Suburban North Conference’s two undefeated teams as the Hawks are 4-0 while Pattonville is 5-0 in league play.

The Hawks will also play at Ritenour on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Hazelwood Central has relied on three starting pitchers to handle the bulk of the innings. Junior pitcher Jonathan Harris, the 2010 Suburban North Player of the Year, is having another stellar campaign. He is 3-0 with a 1.47 ERA, and he has 25 strikeouts in 19 innings.

Coach Van Vannatta’s staff also features Kurtis Haus, who is 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA.

Offensively, Matt Dezort is batting a sizzling .522 and he has team-highs with 12 hits, 12 runs, five triples and 10 RBI. Harris is batting a robust .467, while teammate Shahid Watson is hitting .429 with seven RBI.

McCluer North’s baseball team has had several games postponed by rain and is 2-4 after beating Parkway North, 10-7, this past Friday. The Stars play Ritenour on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. and at McCluer on Thursday at 4 p.m., followed by a home game against Ladue on Friday at 4:15 p.m.

The Stars junior third baseman Tyler Hunt is hitting .429 with 12 RBI, and he has pitched 12 innings with 12 strikeouts. McCluer North is 1-3 in conference play.

McCluer baseball is 3-8, including a 2-4 mark in the Suburban North. The Comets play at Hazelwood East on Tuesday at 4 p.m. before their rivalry game with McCluer North on Thursday.

Hazelwood Central boys track and field finished in first place with 90 points last Saturday at the Charlie Beck Invitational at University City High School. The Hawks won the 1,600-meter relay in 3:19.40, led by junior Marc Franks and senior Michael Hester, who also won the 400-meter dash in 48.7 seconds. Lafayette placed a distant second place with 73 points.
