McCluer North Appoints New Head Basketball Coach

Assistant boys basketball coach Trevor Laney has been named the head coach for the Stars.

Less than one month after McCluer North Boys’ Basketball Coach Randy Reed announced he’s leaving high school basketball for junior college level ball, the school has chosen his successor.

McCluer North Athletic Director Bruce Smith named the Stars’ Assistant Boys’ Basketball Coach Trevor Laney as the new head coach. Laney has worked under Reed for the past 16 seasons and has served as the junior varsity boys’ basketball coach.

“I think Trevor is a great choice for this position,” Smith said. “He has been loyal to this program and has been an important part of the team's three state championships. More importantly, he is an excellent coach and teacher that will hold athletes accountable both on the court and in the classroom."

Reed announced he would be leaving the Stars in late May to head the St. Louis Community College Boys’ Basketball program after Randy Albrecht retired after 36 years in the school’s system.

In an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Reed pointed to Laney as a great fit to fill his shoes.

“He’s been the J.V. coach for the past 16 years,” Reed said in the article. “He came in with me. He understands the way I coach, and he’s been with me every step of the way when we won the state championships and the district titles. He’s been right there. He knows McCluer North basketball in and out.”

Laney will take on the appointment effective immediately with working in the McCluer North youth basketball camp.

The first practice for the boys’ basketball team will be Nov. 4.
