Hazelwood Central Girls Conclude Solid Season
The Hawks finish 23-6 after losing to St. Joseph's Academy, 56-34, in the Class 5 girls basketball quarterfinals.
Like so many other teams have experienced this season, the Hazelwood Central girls found the height of St. Joseph’s Academy to be stifling and too much to overcome.
The Hawks finished this season with a high-quality 23-6 record after losing to St. Joseph's, 56-34, on Saturday afternoon in the Class 5 girls basketball quarterfinals at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
The teams also played on Feb. 4, when St. Joseph’s won, 70-60.
Hawks coach Wendy Reeves saw her squad frustrated by the Angels’ zone defenses and long arms. Hazelwood Central shot very poorly, making just 15-of-58 shots. St. Joseph’s lead was only 25-15 at halftime, but it dominated the second half as the Hawks failed to draw within single digits.
Guard Candyce Ussery led Central with nine points in her final high school game. She led the Hawks this season at 12.4 points per game this season.
The Angels were led by 6-foot-3 Sydney Stipanovich, who scored a game-high 16 points, and added 13 rebounds and eight blocks. She is one three Angels who are at least 6-foot-1, including the Stock twins, Morgan and Maddie.
St. Joseph’s advances to the Class 5 semifinals at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo. later this week.
