More Than 40 Students Transferred, Enrolled in Hazelwood School District

Students transferring from Riverview Gardens, Normandy have begun to pour into the district.

As enrollment for the 2013-2014 school year picks up at Hazelwood School District, the number of transfers from the Riverview Gardens and Normandy School District has begun.

More than 40 students have transferred to the neighboring school district, with a majority coming from Riverview Gardens, Hazelwood School District assistant superintendent for communications Diana Gulotta said.

The transfers stem from a Missouri Supreme Court Ruling last month that allows for students in an unaccredited school districts transferring to accredited school districts. Interested students from Riverview Gardens and Normandy school districts, the unaccredited school districts in the area, have begun the process of transferring from the districts.

At this time, students who have transferred have yet to be placed, and Gulotta said that the number of interested students would not be final until Aug. 2, following the deadline set for transfer applications.

The Hazlewood Board of Education has yet to finalize policies regarding class size, she said.

For students interested in transferring, they have to get a form approved by their respective district before submitting an application to the Cooperating School District of St. Louis. For those interested in Ferguson-Florissant and Hazelwood school districts, however, students just have to go to those districts directly following approval from Riverview Gardens or Normandy.

Those interested in transferring have limited time, however, as applications for transfer must be submitted to Normandy or Riverview Gardens by the end of business day Aug. 1.
