“A conscientious worker who aims to succeed in all of his classes, Jahvonta’ aims for success,” Hazelwood Central science teacher Julie Grogan said. “He is a diligent worker, who always puts forth his best effort and often surpasses the expectations of highest standard. He will often time come to my room during academic mentoring lab to work ahead of the class and complete his projects. In class he never hesitates to help others while still being on task himself.”

Calvin Payne, a senior at Hazelwood East High School, also received an academic achievement award.

Chappelle received recognition for her athletic abilities at Hazelwood Central.

“I have known Alexis for four years as a member of the varsity girls basketball team at HCHS,” Wendy Reeves, a Hazelwood Central math teacher, said. “She has reached milestones that no other players have reached in our school’s history. In four years, she played in every varsity basketball game. She is the only girl to score over 1,000 points, all in a Hazelwood Central uniform. Not only is she an outstanding basketball player, she is also an incredible soccer goalie and a great student.”

Chappelle will play basketball at Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville next school year.

NCCU recognized Abdullahi for her high school community service and citizenship.

“Najath has a consistent work ethic and is a leader among her peers,” Amie Shea, a Hazelwood Central family and consumer sciences teacher, said. “She has maintained a stellar attendance record while maintaining her duties as a part-time employee. Because she believes in education and bettering her community, she has combined both passions and has dedicated over 600 hours of her time tutoring elementary school children; clearly, surpassing the required 50 hours of service needed for graduation.”

Also honored during the dinner were:

David Duncan, Hazelwood Southeast Middle School, Outstanding Academic Achievement

Cincere Drummond, Hazelwood East Middle School, Athletic Achievement

Aja Hasam, Hazelwood Southeast Middle School, Community Service/Citizenship Award
