Hazelwood Central Looks to Turn in a Winning Season

The Hawks look to have a better conference season in softball.

The softball program is on the rise.

After posting just three wins in 2009, the Hawks won seven games in 2010 and nine last fall.

"I think we're going to be able to build on that," Central coach Amy Shelton said. "I'd say we're heading in the right direction."

Central posted several landmark wins last season including a 7-6 triumph over traditionally tough Hazelwood West. The Hawks also played a tight game with eventual Suburban North Conference champion before dropping a 5-4 decision to the Stars, who did not lose a league contest all season.

Those efforts, coupled with an influx of young talent, give the Hawks a legitimate shot at a winning season.

"That's the goal," Shelton said. "We had a couple years where we were rebuilding. Now, we want to pick it up a little bit."

The Hawks will rely heavily on four key returnees from this past season's 9-13 squad.

Senior pitcher/shortstop Nakeyah Bradford leads the way. Bradford hit .281 last season. An all-around athlete, Bradford is strong defensively. Shelton would prefer to use her as an everyday shortstop.

"We're much better defensively that way," Shelton said.

Senior catcher Ajah Doughlas and junior Keeva Knox return to provide more experience and leadership.

Doughlas hit .263 and belted a team-high two home runs last season. Knox is moving to left field after starting at first last year. She hit .271 in 2010 with 10 RBIs, the most among returning players. Bradford, Doughlas and Knox come off solid summer campaigns.

Junior Crystal Wren, who hit .333 last fall, is back in the outfield.

Junior pitcher Alexis McClendon will contend for a starting role. Shelton is hoping for big things from freshman Samantha Creachbaum, who will start somewhere on the infield.

The Hawks open the season Friday with an early season showdown at rival West.

"We've very happy with some of the young players that came out this year," Shelton said. "Everyone is working hard."
