Ferguson-Florissant Sets Activity Pass to Help Budget Woes

All district high school students will now have to pay $50 if staying after school and taking the bus.

When Ferguson-Florissant high school students return next fall, they’ll have to pay the price to participate in extracurricular activities.

At the Ferguson-Florissant Board of Education meeting this month, Director of Secondary Education Nicole Whitesell informed the board that an activity pass will be sold to high school students, starting this fall. The activity pass will cost $50 for the entire year at any time of the year.

The new pass program comes as a result of the district having an up to $10 million shortfall in the next school year. Whitesell said the idea is to be able to raise $30,000 from all the high schools as a result.

With a declining budget and increased costs, Whitesell said this was the best option without having to cut any programming or activities.

McCluer, McCluer North and McCluer South-Berkeley students would be able to purchase the pass and have an ID badge that allows them to ride the activity or athletic bus if students stay over for activities.

For those students who stay afterschool for mandatory tutoring or detention, administrators would issue a one-day pass.

Students are also able to purchase a one-day pass to ride the bus for $2.

The pass does have a few incentives, such as free admission to all Ferguson-Florissant home-school athletic competitions, free admission to evening assemblies and a reduced price for home school drama productions.

The pass will be able to be purchased during school registration at the beginning of the year.

Hazelwood School District currently has an activity pass that costs $45.

There was no action taken on the item as it was just an informative item on the agenda.
