2 Ferguson-Florissant Teachers Honored by Science Center Award

The two teachers were honored for their methods in enhancing performance in math and science.

The Saint Louis Science Center’s Carol B. and Jerome T. Loeb Prize for Excellence in Teaching Science & Mathematics named two Ferguson-Florissant teachers as finalists for the prize.

Kristine Becker of Halls Ferry Elementary School and Erin King of McCluer North High School were two of five finalists recognized in the entire St. Louis area.

“We are always pleased when our educators are recognized for the great work they do with students,” Ferguson-Florissant Superintendent Art McCoy said. “It is especially gratifying to have two teachers from the Ferguson-Florissant School District represented among the field of five finalists for this year’s Loeb Prize.”

Carol and Jerome Loeb endowed the award in 1995 with the purpose of rewarding teachers who are able to “significantly enhance students’ performances in the areas of science and mathematics,” according to the Saint Louis Science Center website.

“Each year we interview so many exceptionally talented teachers and it is very difficult to choose only five finalists,” Carol Loeb said. ”I am grateful to have the opportunity to recognize these teachers for the work they do to transform students into leaders of tomorrow.”

This year, Kirkwood High School physics and astronomy teacher Joseph Bartin won the award.

“I remain a teacher because I am inspired by the work, wonder and curiosity of the students with whom I spend my time,” he said in a press release.

The second place award went to Susan Doering of St. Francis of Assisi School in Oakville, and Karen Torretta of Oakville High School was also one of the five finalists.
