13 Boy Scouts Earn Eagle Scout Rank in Hazelwood School District

Eight Hazelwood Central students received the rank through community service and hard work.

Students in the Hazelwood School District recently reached the highest honor bestowed upon a Boy Scout.

Thirteen high school and middle school boys achieved the rank of Eagle Scout this year, including eight Hazelwood Central students. Andrew Ford, Troop 829; Nicolas Ford, Troop 829; Cody Ford, Troop 829; Brandon Goehri, Troop 600; Brandon Marolt, Troop 884; Joseph Radichel, Troop 702; Eric Radichel, Troop 702; Roderick Robin, Troop 551 each earned the merit after meeting all requirements of the Boy Scouts of America.

“I learned a whole lot during the process,” Nicolas Ford said. “Only about four percent of Boy Scouts earn the rank of Eagle Scout. To say that I’m a part of that four percent is a huge honor.”

In order to become an Eagle Scout, a scout must do a number of tasks, including progressing through five earlier ranks in order, earning 21 merit badges, including ones such as personal fitness, family life and citizenship in the world; six months in a troop leadership position; attend a Scoutmaster conference; plan, develop and lead a community service project and go in front of the Eagle Scout board of review.

Each scout took on a different project that helped the North County community.

Brothers Joseph and Eric Radichel decided to do their service project at the Kinloch Learning Center, as Joseph painted a map of the United States and created hopscotch boards and Eric built a nature trail and fire pit.

Marolt and Goehri built benches. Goehri built a bench for the St. Louis County Library Jamestown Bluff branch. Marolt built eight benches for Babler State Park’s outdoor education center.

“I can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t involved in scouts,” Goehri said. “I knew this was something I wanted to do. I set the goal to become an Eagle Scout and I have accomplished that. I am very proud of that.”

The other students honored with the Eagle Scout honor, include:

• Sean Butler, a senior at Hazelwood West High School from Troop 942

• Paul Feldmann, a senior at Hazelwood West High School from troop 921

• Joseph Maltzman, a senior at Hazelwood West High School from Troop 740

• Sean Owens, a senior at Hazelwood West High School from Troop 829

• Nicholas Rosario, an eighth grader at Hazelwood North Middle School from Troop 551

Two million boys have achieved the Eagle Scout rank, according to the Boy Scouts of America website. In 2012, more than 57,900 earned the rank, which is 7 percent of boy scouts across the country.
