Nonresidents Could Face Higher Florissant Pool Fees

The Florissant City Council debated the possibility of raising the fees before the pool season begins.

For those not living in the city of Florissant, you could be facing a higher fee at the pools this summer.

The Florissant City Council discussed the possibility of increasing the nonresident fee for pools and possibly the ice rink during the wintertime during its Monday night work session. Most recently, the Council approved an ordinance that would decrease the residential rental fee of the Behlmann-Zykan Nature Lodge.

The council had hoped that Parks and Recreation Director Todd Schmidt would be present at the meeting, but no administration representatives were able to attend the work session.

Ward 1 Councilman Tim Lee said that Director Schmidt is doing a comparison of nonresidential fees in surrounding areas, including Hazelwood, Bridgeton, Maryland Heights and Ferguson. For example, Schmidt is comparing Koch Aquatic Center to Maryland Heights Aquaport.

Currently, nonresidents can purchase a season pass for $100 (youth), $150 (adult) or $200 (family) or pay daily fees of $2, $4 or $6 respectively.

Lee said that nonresidents currently get a bargain with the season pass, but Ward 8 Councillman Mark Schmidt thought otherwise.

“Why are we giving them a break?” he asked. “It should only be daily fee.”

Although prices for the season have already been published in the city’s brochure, the council felt it could still look at the possibility of increasing the fee ahead of pools opening. Bangert Pool is scheduled to open June 1, and Koch Family Aquatic Center is scheduled to open May 25.

The council requested Schmidt’s recommendations before creating a bill for consideration.
