Late Mayor James J. Eagan Honored in 'Walk Thru History' Program

Florissant officials, residents dedicate plaque to first mayor under city charter.

Before the Florissant City Council got to business in the council chambers inside of on Monday, the council handled a special dedication outside of it.

Mayor Tom Schneider along with former , councilors and residents dedicated the eighth plaque in the city’s “Walk Thru History” program to the late mayor James J. Eagan.

“This is real special,” Mayor Schneider said following the program. “I still remember the day I interviewed with him.”

Suzanne Eagan, wife of the late mayor, along with several other of her family members, stood by as Mayor Schneider unveiled the plaque along the sidewalk in front of City Hall.

“This was very nice, very emotional. He did not like a fuss,” Mrs. Eagan said of her late husband. “He always said the only tribute he’d like would be his children. The would not be the Eagan Center if he had his way.”

Former Ward 3 Councilman Ken Fowler, who worked with Eagan from 1968-1979, said he thought the late mayor would be proud, but he’d still not like the thought of it in other respects.

The “Walk Thru History” program began three years ago, according to a press release.

Former Mayor Robert Lowery said he founded the program and was inspired by the University City Walk of Fame.

“We’re the most historic city in St. Louis County as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

The program honors those individuals who made valuable contributions to Florissant.

Mayor Schneider said that five more plaques will be dedicated along rue St. Francois, including to Sidney Garrett—great-grandfather of former Ward 6 Councilman —Henry Koch and Arthur Bangert.
