Gov. Nixon Visits Area School for Innovation High School Program

The new state pilot program will provide $1.3 million in funding to area school districts, including $289,900 to Ferguson-Florissant School District.

Gov. Jay Nixon sparked energy and excitement in Pattonville High School students, teachers and faculty Monday morning as he spoke during his visit to the school for the Innovation High School Program.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education tapped Pattonville for a $500,000 grant as a part of the program. Ferguson-Florissant and St. Louis Public School districts also had representatives present as they also received grant funding to participate in the pilot program.

Missouri is one of six states chosen by Harvard University and Jobs for the Future to be a part of this $1.3 million program, according to a news release.

“Through targeted investments in education, we are preparing students for the jobs of tomorrow and giving businesses the skilled workforce they need today,” Gov. Nixon said in a press release. “By allowing students to earn dual-credits in the classroom, and gain hands-on work experience through local internships, we are placing these students on a solid path to a rewarding career in a high-demand field.”

The program will allow students to participate in a registered apprenticeship program and earn national certifications as well as college credit.

Ferguson-Florissant Superintendent Art McCoy said previously that the district began the career paths a couple of years ago to get their students prepared for jobs in the 21st century.

"We are very pleased that our work is being acknowledged with this funding, and we are very excited about the expanded opportunities it provides our students," he said.
