Florissant Officials Pay Tribute to Injured Officer

The mayor, chief of police and city council take time out to say a few words about Officer Mike Vernon, while honoring other local heroes.

Before presenting commendations to four Florissant police officers, Mayor Tom Schneider and Police Chief William Karabas spoke briefly about Monday’s incident.

“He was so courageous that it was humbling,” Mayor Schneider said about his visit with the officer. “We have so many dedicated officers who are willing to go in harm’s way for us. It says a lot about these men.”

Mayor Schneider asked for a moment of silent prayer preceding the police commendations.

Chief Karabas talked about Officer Vernon’s condition briefly saying he suffered a collapsed lung and a break in his collarbone and rotator cup from his wounds, but he remains with a great attitude. He is in critical but stable condition.

Karabas also said that another individual might be involved in the crime, and the detectives are looking for the person involved.

Following the brief speeches, Mayor Schneider and Chief Karabas presented four Florissant police officers – Officers Daniel Fletcher, Steve Johnson, Steve Neuhauser and Daniel Howard – with commendations for their work in the community.

The audience gave standing ovations for not only the officers but for the police department.

During the council announcements section, Ward 3 Councilman Joe Eagan spoke of his thoughts and feelings on the shooting. 

"We're kindred souls," he said. "I'm still walking down the recovery road."

Eagan said he had a chance to visit with Officer Vernon and offered some words of wisdom from his experience. He said he told him to make sure to take care of himself first and to not be afraid to send people away if he needs the time. 

"He's got a long road to go down," he said. "I suggest we all go with him. I hope and know he will get support from this community."

Mayor Schneider said that the city employees would be holding a prayer vigil at Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
