Don Voss, who serves as the commander of the St. Louis Veterans Coalition and a 40-year resident of Florissant, has helped put on a 9/11 commemorative event in Florissant for the past four years.

Voss said that 9/11 had a small personal effect on him as he was in Washington D.C. during the tragedy for an American Legion legislative committee meeting.

“We couldn’t get home,” he said. “We couldn’t go anywhere.”

After being stuck in the nation’s capitol for three days, Voss said that he and others rented a car to return home, as no transportation was running during that time.

One thing that Voss would like to see on Sunday is a big turnout. In past years, he said that approximately 100 people have attended, including people from South County area.

Mayor Schneider shares a similar sentiment.

“We would like everyone to come out to the ceremony and pay their respects to all those that lost their lives on a terrible day that America will never forget,” Mayor Schneider said in a press release. “The citizens of Florissant are patriotic people, and I am looking forward to having you come out and support this event. The program should only be about an hour long.”

Entertainment begins at noon, and the formal ceremony is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

Medallions will be presented to fire and police personnel who went to help in New York following 9/11, Voss said.
