Florissant Council Candidates Keep Cool in Hot Conditions

Despite the high temperatures for Tuesday, candidates continue to spread their messages at the polls.

Although the National Weather Service forecasted a temperature of 103°F in the St. Louis metro area, that didn’t stop the candidates of Ward 3 and Ward 6 from a last ditch effort to give their message to the voters.

At , Ward 6 candidate Pat Stinnett and a small group of volunteers sat under a tent in the parking lot of the church, while Steve Purgahn and his family stood beneath the trees. Each thanked residents for their votes and kept high spirits despite the blazing weather.

“I’m feeling very good,” Stinnett said. “It’s been a good day.”

At close to noon, Stinnett and Purgahn estimated that a little more than 200 had come to vote, which was higher than both had expected. Both were also pleased that the hot weather hadn’t deterred voters.

“I’ve been out four times a week in heat, and it’s not bothering me,” Purgahn said.

At , Ward 3 candidates Mark Behlmann stood beneath a canopy tent, and Elizabeth O’Fallon stood beneath an umbrella to speak to voters.

“I expected half of the turnout, and it’s been great,” O’Fallon said.

Behlmann said he expected a turnout of 600 for Ward 3, and it seemed to be on target with that number.

For candidate Joe Eagan, who stayed posted at , he said that he felt hopeful, but the race for the next Ward 3 Councilman would be tight.

“It’s going to be an extremely close race,” he said. “It’s going to go down to the wire.”

Polls close at 7 p.m.
