Florissant Could Officially Become Valley of Flowers

Although many know Florissant as the , the city has moved one step further to making that title official.

The will look at approving Substitute Bill 8750 to make the “Valley of Flowers” the official motto of Florissant.

Ward 6 Councilman Andrew Podleski proposed the ordinance and said he thought now would be the proper time to discuss it.

“Other cities have the beautiful city, tree city, but Florissant is the Valley of Flowers,” he said.

According to the new substitute bill, the motto should be the only motto used in official signs, advertising, correspondence, letterhead and documents from the city.

In addition, use of other mottos would be discontinued, and signs and documents including the new official motto would be updated as time and budget permits.

The original bill mandated the motto would be the only thing used in official city documents and signage, which caused a bit of concern for City Attorney .

Hessel said that there’s nothing wrong with Florissant establishing an official motto, but the language of the original bill was a concern as far as enforcement and punishment.

Hessel proposed that the bill be changed to a resolution, which is similar to an ordinance but is a nonbinding proclamation. He did agree that a change in language would be better as well.

Ward 4 Councilman Keith English agreed that a resolution could be in order as a law would be hard to enforce, but he said he would like to see something happen.

The Florissant City Council meeting takes place, at 8 p.m. Monday at Florissant City Hall.
