Woman Helped Set Up Black Jack Man in Attempted Robbery, Police Say

The woman, charged with assault, called to have the man pick her up and take her to his house, where they were met by two men, police said.

A woman faces criminal charges for helping two men attempt to rob and shoot a Black Jack man.

Chera Mason, of the 2700 block of Geyer Avenue in St. Louis, was charged Tuesday with first-degree assault.

A neighbor in the 12500 block of Evening Shade Drive in Black Jack found a man lying in her backyard bleeding from a gunshot wound in his thigh Dec. 15. Before losing consciousness, he told his neighbor that two men had been waiting for him when he opened the door to enter his home, according to a police report.

St. Louis County Police said the man regained consciousness several days later and told officers he had known Mason for a long time, and she called him a few days before the assault and asked him if he could pick her up and take her to his home.

He agreed and picked her up at an apartment complex in Berkeley. As they were walking up to his door, two men approached him and one pulled out a gun and demanded the access code to enter the residence without setting off an alarm, police said.

The man refused and struggled with the man for the gun. During the struggle the man was shot in the leg, according to St. Louis County Police.

The man said the two men focused on him and did not speak to Mason. Police traced the phone used back to contact the man back to Mason’s relative.

When officers arrested Mason, she denied knowing the victim and said she was not present when he was shot.

Mason was released from St. Louis County jail Feb. 17. Bail has been set at $75,000, cash only.
