Remembering Sept. 11: Florissant Police Lend a Helping Hand, Part 2

Det. Scott Cork and three other Florissant officers share their journey to New York following Sept. 11 through photos.

One week following the attack on the World Trade Center, the sent four officers—Scott Cork, James Schmitz, Brian Dolan and Tim Lowery—to assist in New York City.

Det. Scott Cork, who was one of four officers selected, said the officers helped secure the Immigration and Naturalization Services building and make sure to thoroughly review those entering the building.

Cork said his superior officer asked if he'd be interested in helping in New York, and Cork immediately volunteered for the opportunity.

“I know it was a bad circumstance, but it was one of those once-in-a lifetime things,” he said.

After driving more than 950 miles, Det. Cork said that he and his fellow officers arrived to thick ash on the streets, fires still being extinguished and the smell of death in the air as officials continued to recover bodies from the rubble.

During their weeklong experience, Cork and other officers ventured to Ground Zero to take in what happened and captured several shots of the area in photos.

With the approaching, Det. Cork said that although it seems like yesterday, it’s something he wouldn’t want to see again.

Det. Cork shared with Florissant Patch several of his personal photos from that week.
