Man Rams Police Car in Stolen Pickup, Officials Say

A man recently charged in a North County shooting also rammed a St. Louis County police squad car with a stolen truck July 2.

Derenta Street, 23, of the 1000 block of Hornsby Avenue in St. Louis, was charged with assaulting a police officer and tampering with a motor vehicle.

St. Louis County Police reported that an officer spotted Street in a pickup truck parked in a driveway in the 3500 block of Haber Drive in North County south of Black Jack. The truck had been reported stolen in Illinois.

The officer pulled up, blocking the driveway.

St. Louis County Police spokesman Randy Vaughn said as the officer got out of his truck, Street drove at the vehicle and rammed the squad car. The officer was able to move out of the way to avoid being struck, police said.

Vaughn said Street was trapped in the truck, but continued to resist arrest and during the struggle had injuries to his forehead and arm.

Street recently was charged with a North County shooting that occurred in July 2012 after a lab analysis matched a bullet to a handgun possessed by Street.

He also was charged with assault in Maplewood for knocking over a gas station attendant last summer while driving away and not paying for gasoline.

Street is being held in the St. Louis County Justice Center. Bail was set at $75,000.
