Florissant Sees Crime Decrease for Third Year in a Row

For the third consecutive year, the City of Florissant experienced no homicides, according to reports accumulated from the Florissant Police Department.

Overall, Florissant saw a 15 percent decrease in crime, according to a press release from Florissant Police Chief William Karabas. The past year saw decreased crimes in categories such as stealing, motor vehicle theft and robberies.

Some of the key points and highlights for comparing 2011 crimes to 2010, include:

• Stealing decreased by more than 28 percent in 2011. This past year, there was a total of 639 stealing incidents, compared to 895 in 2010.
• Rape and attempted rapes saw a slight increase in 2011. The number increased by three in 2011 for a total of five. There were two incidents reported in 2010, according to police reports.
• For the second consecutive year, police reports showed no homicides. The last homicides took place in 2009 when there were two.
• Motor vehicle thefts saw a 40 percent decrease in 2011, which is a big change from 2010. According to reports, this past year, 102 motor vehicle thefts occurred. In 2010, there was a slight increase as reports rose to 169 incidents.
• Robberies saw a continued decrease in 2011. Robberies decrease from 47 to 39, which makes for a 17 percent decrease. Last year, we reported a 24 percent decrease.

According to the release, approximately 1,858 reported incidents happened in the past year, which is a decrease of 328 crimes from 2010.
