Florissant Police Arrest Man Relating to Officer's Shooting

Brian Lamont Cannon Jr., 20, has been arrested for the shooting of Florissant police officer Mike Vernon.

Vernon as well as other officers responded to a burglary in the 1800 block of Banstead when an alarm was set off. The burglar fled on foot, and Officer Vernon was checking out local businesses and dumpsters when he was shot at multiple times and hit twice, according to a Florissant police report.

Monday, the police said they had a person in custody who was being questioned in relation to the burglary and shooting.

That same day, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office issued warrants for Cannon, 20, of 5200 block of Wren Street in St. Louis, with the charges of assault in the first-degree of a law enforcement officer, armed criminal action and second-degree burglary, according to a press release. Police have said that the investigation is ongoing.

Officer Vernon has been listed as critical but stable condition at DePaul Hospital. Vernon is being treated for a spinal cord injury as well as other injuries, including a bullet piercing his lung, according to the news release.

The release also said, “Officer Vernon appreciates the community’s outpouring of support.”

The police will have a press conference at the Tuesday at 2 p.m.
