Missouri statutes are unfair to election judges from an Independent Party

According to the Missouri Poll Worker sign up sheet:

*Denotes required fields. Form cannnot** be accepted if the information is not complete.

“Election authorities are required by Missouri statutes to have an equal number of Democratic and Republican election judges at the polls (115.081, 115.087, RSMo). Please select one of the following options:

If you choose to work as a Democratic or Republican election judge your name will also be forwarded to the chairman of that party in your county of voter registration per state statutes.”

** Note there is a misspelling of “can not”. However, there is another, more important, error on this sign-up sheet. It is the fact, according to Missouri statutes, that if you do not choose one of the two political parties identified here, your request to work at the polls is illegal. You will not be accepted or even notified that you are attempting to break the Missouri law.  Bad news when you need work and the polls need more workers.

Also note that this is not a Federal law. According to the U.S. constitution, this land is: “of the people, by the people and for the people”. There is no requirement to select one of two options: Democrat or Republican. It is implied that you have freedom to choose anyone, regardless of their party affiliation.

A recommendation to fix this ‘only two-party problem’, would be to add a third option:

“I am interested in being an Independent Election Judge“

A third party of judges would also allow a mediator between two opposing judges. It would also give some people a third option when they ask themselves, “What would Jesus do?”
