Florissant Honors Henry F. Hendel

The city hosted a plaque dedication making him as the 16th Walk Through History honoree at Wednesday Night Out.

Updated Sept. 27 with a photo of the Hendel plaque.

Henry F. Hendel was a life-long resident of Florissant and a World War II Army veteran.

He is known as someone who loved Florissant and was a true ambassador for the city, so the city is paying its respects to his legacy and has named him the 16th Walk Through History honoree.

Hendel is known to the public as the owner of Hendel’s Market, his family's namesake. In 1873, the Hendel's building was established as a grocery and general store. The Hendel family purchased it in 1915.

For the next 78 years, the store continued as a specialty grocery and butcher shop. He and his wife Marge operated it for 47 years until they retired in August 1993. In November 1994, the family sold it to Ed Bennett who transformed it into a restaurant.

Hendel was an active member of the American Legion Post 444 and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

The ceremony was held on Wednesday, Sept. 25 on rue St. Francois and St. Jacques right before the start of the Wednesday Night Out festivities at Hendel Café.

The Walk Through History plaque is always dedicated to someone that has made a valuable contribution to the City of Florissant.
