BBB Alerts Consumers To Problems With Florissant Appliance Store

The BBB is warning consumers about Big Frank's Discount Appliances of Florissant, which has been the subject of numerous complaints to the BBB.

When you buy a used appliance, you're always taking a chance that it may not last. But for many people with limited incomes, used appliances are all they can afford.

Today's Better Business Bureau press release details problems some customers of Big Frank's Discount Appliances have had with machines they purchased at the store in Florissant. The customers told the BBB that the appliances arrived broken or stopped working days after they were installed. Big Frank's has an F rating with the BBB, the lowest possible grade.

The customers also say the defective appliances caused them to lose hundreds of dollars in spoiled food or caused damage to their homes or businesses when the appliances leaked. More details are in today's BBB press release.

How can consumers protect themselves against businesses that sell defective merchandise? The BBB recommends that consumers always check out companies before they finalize purchases. BBB Business Reviews show whether a company has been the subject of complaints and how complaints have been resolved, as well as other information about the company.

In addition, the BBB recommends:

  • Don't buy the appliance without inspecting it carefully. Open the doors and check it for cleanliness and any obvious signs of problems.
  • Ask the store or other seller whether the appliance was tested before it was placed on the floor.
  • Study the purchase contract carefully, making a note of any warranties and understanding the terms before you buy.
  • Use a credit card whenever possible in case you need to challenge the charge.
  • Check out the company’s BBB Business Review at www.bbb.org or by calling 314-645-3300.

I've bought from this guy before and got exactly what I expected...well...maybe more.
I knew this jalopy of an old washer might not last more than 6 months. Well the guy said if it breaks in less than 6 months he'd fix it free. (But yes, you will have to bring him the machine.) It lasted 1.5 years and kicked the bucket. What can you expect for $100 right? It held me over until I could afford to buy new machines from sears. Machines are machines. If you buy and old worn out one...you got what you paid for. Same with other machines...with age...they break down. So..is it this guys fault for selling an old machine or your fault for buying an old machine?

Many of those who complained to the BBB said the appliances either never worked or broke down within days, and the company was unresponsive.

We used to use Overland appliance - which was real good, and inexpensive - however they ended up folding when the economy took a dive. Recently we purchased a used refrigerator from Frostie's appliance, and we've been very happy with their service. They took their time working with us, as we wanted something that match out kitchen, and we had to have a specific size. I would recommend them to anyone looking for used appliances here in Saint Louis.
