A number of intersections along North Highway 67 remain knocked out, which is causing a backup along the corridor. More than 5,000 were without power in the Florissant area as of Thursday morning, according to the Ameren Missouri outage map.

As of 4:30 p.m., that number had decreased to a little more than 4,000. The city continues to experience intermittent power outages with some places having power and then it going back out.

On Facebook, Kids Again said that they would close up shop for the day due to the intermittent issues and City Hall also had power outages this afternoon.

Florissant police have asked residents and drivers to avoid the areas of Tahoe and Howdershell--as that is a heavily damaged area--and North Highway 67 and Patterson, department spokesman Andy Haarman said.

Police encourage residents to use New Florissant Road or New Halls Ferry Road to get around town until traffic lights return and to ease congestion, according to a Nixle alert.

Police officers have been helping direct traffic throughout the city to keep the flow going and have been patrolling the areas to identify problems in neighborhoods, according to an afternoon news release from the city.

Street, health and park maintenance departments have already been out assisting where they are needed the most, according to a press release from Mayor Tom Schneider’s office.

Residents who are already in the process of cleaning up their yards and homes can expect some extra help this weekend.

According to a press release from Mayor Schneider's office, Meridian Waste will begin picking up yard waste from those hardest hit areas Saturday.

Residents must be up to date with their payment and have the tree limbs and other waste bundled for pick up. Also, "vegetation must be bagged or placed in yard waste containers, and the tree limbs can be bundled and cut into 4 foot pieces. Meridian is unable to accept limbs more than 4 inches in diameter."

Mayor Schneider said in the press release that power for everyone should be returned soon. The release also indicated that damage assessment and evaluation has already begun at the city level.

In an afternoon news release, Mayor Schneider said that all of the assets that could be spared went to Hazelwood, and they are returning the favor by opening their Civic Center East to Florissant residents in need.

The James J. Eagan Center has also been opened as a comfort station until Friday at 9 p.m.

Schools Update

Although Cross Keys Middle School and Wedgwood Elementary School were closed Thursday, the district intends for the schools to be open tomorrow and operational as normal, Ferguson-Florissant spokeswoman Jana Shortt said.

The power has been restored to the schools, but they would announce if any other problems had been discovered.

Hazelwood School District announced on its Facebook page that due to the storm, Hazelwood West High School, Hazelwood West Middle School, McNair Elementary, Russell Elementary, Armstrong Elementary and West Early Childhood Center will be closed Friday.
