Cinco de Mayo Goes to Breast Health in North County

Northwest Healthcare hosts "Mammo-thon" and encourages women to get their annual mammogram done.

Although several folks might be toasting or grabbing their favorite Mexican dish for Cinco de Mayo, Northwest Healthcare is focused on breast health.

The healthcare center will host a “Mammo-thon” Sunday to encourage women to get regular mammograms for breast cancer. Women will be able to receive mammograms during the event if scheduled.

Becky Niebruegge, senior coordinator for marketing and communications for said that normally the center holds such an event during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October but wanted to hold another event earlier in the year.

She also said that the center’s newest breast surgeon, Dr. Chris Menendez, has noticed women in the North County area find their breast cancer in latter stages, such as stage two or three, so the center is pushing early detection.

Niebruegge said that women who are 40 or older are encouraged to get an annual mammogram.

Although the appointments for the “Mammo-thon” are are full, Niebruegge said that Christian Hospital takes walk-ins daily Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and in June, Northwest Healthcare will have the equipment to have the same offering. Currently, patients have to schedule appointments.
