2013 Valley of Flowers Has Rainy But Problem-Free Weekend

The new changes for this year's festival didn't receive a true test due to the weather conditions.

The cool, rainy weather this past weekend might have been ideal for a day indoors, but the conditions didn’t prove fruitful for the 2013 Valley of Flowers festival.

Although the festival saw a smaller turnout, festival organizers and police confirm that no problems happened this year.

Earlier this year, the City of Florissant announced a few changes to the festival with one less day and ensuring that adults accompanied anyone under the age of 18 at the Knights of Columbus grounds.

Mayor Tom Schneider said that it wasn’t a good test for the festival’s changes, but that it’ll be made up next year.

Florissant Police spokesman Andy Haarman said it was very quiet due to the bad weather, but the department had prepared for the worst.

Last year, a number of rumors circulated regarding a shooting at the festival grounds. Police said no incidents occurred.

Haarman said he anticipates the rules will remain intact for next year’s festival, and he hopes that the weather would be much approved.

Despite the rainy conditions, the festival did press on and was open for business the entire weekend.

Valley of Flowers Festival Chairman Pat Stinnett said that the weather was disappointing, but he was happy that the skies allowed the parade to happen without missing a beat.

“At the end of the day, it was another outstanding festival,” Stinnett, who also serves as Ward 6 Councilman, said.
