Pro Talk: Chamber President Serves as Face of Organization

As the job climate continues to change, there are several careers that many don’t know a lot of information about them. How did they get there? What kind of training did they undergo?

Well, Florissant Patch is attempting to answer these questions.

Each week, we’re speaking to a new professional or working person about their job, how they got it and what they do.

This week, we spoke to Greater North County Chamber of Commerce President Carolyn Marty about her duties and how she got there.

1. How long have you been in your position?  Two years
2. How did you get into your field? I was very involved with the Chamber during my 26 years of employment with the Suburban Journals and believed strongly in the Chamber’s mission statement, which is a “partnership of business professionals and community leaders united to promote the North County region.” When my predecessor announced her retirement, I thought this might be a great opportunity for me to represent an organization that works to promote the economic development and the quality of life in North County.
3. What training or education did you receive for this position? My degree is in journalism, but I have attended Chamber management classes and statewide conferences to learn more about this field. I also have some great mentors in this profession.
4. What are your main duties or responsibilities in this position? I’m responsible for managing and coordinating all organizational activities of the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce. I also serve as the face of the organization, direct all plans to carry out chamber objectives and implement chamber policies.
5. What tips would you give to someone interested in pursuing this as a career?  Join the Chamber and get involved by attending membership luncheons and serving on one or more committees. Be proactive in promoting the strengths of the businesses, organizations and the cities in the area. Volunteer—it’s a great way to learn more about the Chamber and find out if it’s a good career fit for you.
