Remembering Sept. 11: Florissant Police Lend a Helping Hand

Florissant Det. Scott Cork and others help in the wake of a national tragedy.

One week following the attack on the World Trade Towers, the Florissant Police Department sent four officers to assist in New York City.

Det. Scott Cork, who was one of four officers selected, said the officers helped secure the Immigration and Naturalization Services building.

“I know it was a bad circumstance, but it was one of those once in a lifetime things,” he said.

After driving more than 950 miles, Det. Cork said that he and his fellow officers arrived to thick ash on the streets, fires still being extinguished and the smell of death in the air as officials continued to recover bodies from the rubble.

With the 10-year anniversary approaching, Det. Cork said that although it seems like yesterday, it’s something he wouldn’t want to see again.
