Aubuchon-Herbst House Remains Big Piece of Florissant History

We explore one of the oldest homes in Florissant at 695 Jefferson St.

One of the oldest surviving homes in Florissant and some consider in St. Louis County is the August Aubuchon-Herbst House at 695 N. Jefferson St.

The house, which sits at the corner of Jefferson and rue St. Louis, has undergone a number of changes and owners, but it has remained a staple in the heart of Old Town Florissant.

According to the Florissant Historic Building Survey Inventory, the house dates back to the mid 19th century and appears on a map of Florissant in 1878.

In the description of the original house, it’s noted that it “consists of a simple one-story rectangular with an east-west gabled roof. This roof extends without break over narrow front and rear porches, which each span the entire elevation.”

In 1958, the home underwent a number of renovations that caused little of the original building’s character to remain. For example, the porches on the north and south side of the home were removed, and exterior elements were either replaced or covered up.

The house still does have its original massing and structure beneath the redesign.

In 1975, the house was designated a landmark by the City of Florissant.

In its history, seven have owned the home, including Joseph (Auguste) Aubuchon, John Higgins, Theresa Joas and Donald Timme.

Something else to note of the home is that it’s linked to the French foundation of Florissant. In 2002, the house was appraised at more than $80,000.
