MCCLUER NORTH GIRLS TRACK TEAM WINS FIRST CLASS 4 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP All Three Ferguson-Florissant School District High Schools Field Winners in Annual State Track Competitions

FLORISSANT, MO, June 19, 2014  --  Led by the McCluer North High School girls track team and their first Class 4 state championship, all three high schools in the Ferguson-Florissant School District achieved victories in the 2014 Missouri State Track and Field Championships.  The event was held on Saturday, May 31 at Lincoln University’s Dwight Reed Stadium in Jefferson City.

 

For the first time in school history, the McCluer North High School girls’ track team won the Class 4 state championship.  The Stars, who are coached by Sheldon Webster, garnered 65 points to win the meet.  Team members include Jasmine Barge, Rachel Culberson, Miche-Ala Woods, Sydney Rogers, Demetria Jackson, Jayla Riggins, Kiana Harvey and Michala Austell.

Junior sprinter Barge won four gold medals in leading the Stars to the championship, winning the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter low hurdles as well as being a member of the championship 800 (4x200) and 1,600(4x400) meter relay teams along with Woods, Rogers and Culberson.  Barge set a state record in the 300 meters by finishing in 41.79 seconds.

Additionally, Culberson took second in the 400 meter.  Both athletes also were part of the McCluer North championship relay teams along with Rogers.  The 400-meter relay team, which finished second, was comprised of Riggins, Harvey, Woods and Anderson, who also finished fourth in 100 hurdles.

 

The McCluer South-Berkeley High School  girls track team, coached by Martise Scott, won the Class 3 4x100 and 4x400 meter events and placed second overall in its class team standings.  The Bulldogs also finished second in the 4x200 meter relay and in the 4x800 relay.  The 4x100 team members Octavia Cato, Raven Fletcher, Kamira Franklin and Raheema Westfall set a state record of 47.19 seconds.  Franklin finished second and Cato was third in the 100-meter event. The 4x200 relay team, which finished second, included Neshay Curtis, Cato, Fletcher and Westfall.

 

McCluer High School’s Comets boys track team won the Class 4 4x200 meter relay championship with a time of 1:27:57.  Members of the 4x200 championship team include Sharvon Gunn, Henry Jones, Kevin Spraggins and Racquan Stallings.

 

“We salute the McCluer North Stars girls track team on their first Class 4 state championship,” said Lawrence Larrew, interim superintendent of the Ferguson-Florissant School District.  “We are proud of the accomplishments of these dedicated athletes and coaches at all three of our high schools, and their representation of our school district.  Their hard work and commitment have been rewarded with these accolades.”
