In an effort to cultivate an appreciation for math and science, St. Louis Community College-Florissant Valley will join 63 other colleges and universities to host the 2013 Technology Student Association (TSA) TEAMS Competition on Feb. 15.

The competition will be divided into two parts. Part 1 will take place at 9 a.m. and Part 2, at 10:45 a.m., in the Multipurpose Room in the Student Center. An awards ceremony will follow at 1 p.m., where awards will be presented based on students' scores on the first part of the test. The awards ceremony will be open to the public.

The annual TSA TEAMS program is a national high school engineering competition challenging students to work collaboratively and apply their math and science knowledge in practical, creative ways to solve everyday engineering challenges. After participating in TEAMS, students increase their knowledge of engineering, feel more confident about participating in engineering activities and increase their ability to work with others to solve complex problems.

The 2013 TEAMS theme is Engineering a Secure Cyberspace.

“We currently have 27 teams from six area high schools and each team typically has eight students per team,” said Steve Ehlen, engineering technology instructor at Florissant Valley. “Florissant Valley has been hosting the TEAMS competition since 1993.”

Some 10,000 ninth- to 12th-grade TEAMS participants will gather for one-day events between Feb. 11 and March 11 at 130 competition sites in 48 states and the District of Columbia.
