We're keeping track of the annual festival as we approach its golden anniversary.
While several turned out for the crowning of the 2012 Valley of Flowers Queen Sunday, others turned out to hear the award winners for several other contests.  A number of awards were handed out during the ceremony, and here's a rundown of winners as well as second and third place recipients. Under the Knights of Columbus pavilion, the 50th Valley of Flowers queen was announced and crowned to an ecstatic crowd. Mayor Tom Schneider crowned Monica Wilson, a junior at Incarnate Word Academy, the queen of the 50th annual festival. She was sponsored by Don Henefer Jewelers. Wilson was crowned in front of the 2012 court as well as 17 previous Valley of Flowers queens. After receiving her crown, she thanked her sponsor and parents and she said she’s excited to serve during the upcoming year and to represent Florissant. Saturday has the Valley of Flowers Festival in fully operational and in full swing for the weekend. The flea market, craft fair, Home Grown Gardeners of Florissant and Knights of Columbus grounds will be fully functional and going most of the day. Sponsors of the event will also be available under their tent at the James J. Eagan Center. The first day of the 50th Annual Valley of Flowers festival kicks off tonight with Family Knight at the Knights of Columbus grounds. This night is special for families and all rides cost one ticket, and there will be family meal deals available. The grounds open tonight at 4:30 p.m. and close at 8:30 p.m. For day by day activities of the festival, check out the full guide on our site.
If you believe you’ve got one of the most beautiful babies in Florissant, then you’ve only got a few days left to enter the “Pretty Baby Contest” for the 50th annual Valley of Flowers. A 4x6 photo and a $5 entry fee must be sent in by May 3 to be registered. After the deadline, residents will be charged $7. Festival attendees will be able to cast their vote on the photos at the festival, and the winners will be announced during the awards ceremony on Sunday. There’s a full lineup of performers slated for the weekend as well as a number of activities for both young and old to enjoy. Valley of Flowers Children's Celebration of Performing Arts  The Children’s Celebration of Performing Arts is a fun-filled, exciting family-oriented event beginning on Friday, May 4. It will continue throughout the day on Saturday, May 5 in Florissant Valley Park (grounds of the James J. Earlier this month, the 2012 Valley of Flower’s Court was announced at the annual Queens Dinner, according to a press release. Thirteen ladies and their sponsors were announced at the dinner held April 1 at the James J. Eagan Center. With the 50th anniversary Valley of Flowers festival right around the corner, the City of Florissant has asked residents to return to the roots of the festival – and in their yards. Mayor Tom Schneider and the City Council encourage residents to step up and spruce up their properties, do routine maintenance and, if possible, plant new shrubs and flowers. The mayor said that it would be in honor of the golden anniversary that’s the signature event for the city. Friday is your last chance to get in all of the paperwork for the Valley of Flowers if you’re interested in being a sponsor, in the parade or having a booth. All forms and payments must be sent in for the festival by April 6. The 50th Annual Florissant Valley of Flowers Festival will be held May 3-6. Forms for booths, parade and sponsorhips are all available online or can printed out and mailed into the office. Friday is your last chance to become a part of history and make your mark on the annual Valley of Flowers Festival. Florissant Old Town Partners and the Northern Arts Council have partnered together to host a mural design competition in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Valley of Flowers Festival. The mural idea entries should pertain to historical references or relevance to the City of Florissant or Florissant Valley. The winner will receive $500, and a muralist will paint the winning idea. As the Valley of Flowers’ golden anniversary quickly approaches, it looks like the annual event will be captured in a permanent art fixture. According to NOCO, the Florissant Old Town Partners and Northern Arts Council have teamed up to sponsor a contest that will result in a mural design in honor of the 50th anniversary of the festival. With less than three months to go until the annual Valley of Flowers Festival, plans and preparations are well underway for its golden anniversary. The Valley of Flowers Committee has selected the theme as “Valley of Flowers Celebrates 50 Years of Festivals.” The festival will be May 3-6 throughout the City of Florissant. Kati Mahoney with the Valley of Flowers office said that she is still accepting a few applications for the Valley of Flowers Queen candidates.
