Walmart Gets OK From Florissant City Council
With a vote of 7-2, the council approves the development project.
The council approved the development Monday night.
In her last act as councilwoman, Karen McKay voiced her thoughts on the Walmart project.
“If this bill is passed … this building is going to be one of the best buildings built in the City of Florissant,” she said. She gave kudos to the council and administration for reviewing every issue of the project, and she said that she would be supporting the passage of the bill.
The council approved the development with a vote of 7-2.

Asking that a private business purchase your home is a ridiculous statement. If you want to move, than move. You're not entitled to a "buy out" because a retail facility is building near you. For the lady who requested this last night my suggestion would be to list your house before they break ground if you don't want to live near Walmart.
Walmart is going to be built behind Lowes, on the Zykan property.

Whats "ridiculous"? Not saying Walmart should or shouldn't but here's a big noisy business moving into her neighborhood altering the dynamics of the area... why can't they ask?
I suspect you'd be crying too.

This is terrible news. We moved back to NoCo from St. Charles in 2006 (we despised St. Charles... even in our new neighborhood at the time). We were deciding upon Chesterfield or Florissant/Hazelwood for the move. We chose my hometown as my husband fell in love with the old town area. Over the years I have seen changes, but nothing like what I've seen in the last few. This Walmart decision will just help push things in the wrong direction. Walmart as an institution is a sad example of an American company that bullies all of its vendors. And it targets a certain consumer. I never step foot in Walmarts and most young professionals I know don't either. The City Council failed us on this one.

Who is the "certain consumer" that Walmart targets?

I agree on two points: we moved from st chas in 09, same reason and walmart is an economy imbalancing soulless corporation that does indeed bully vendors and workers too.
I'd say they cater to people who aint smart enough to see the true cost of saving 50 cents on 24 rolls of toilet paper is.

The only reason to put a Wal-Mart in this area is to compete with existing businesses. I hope the city council has a plan for encouraging other businesses to open up in the shopping centers that will slowly become vacant. This is a terrible decision.

I am so glad that they are building the super center in north county. Now I don't have to drive my wife to illinois to one of their walmarts. I guess to each his own but I really like the convenience of having a store that has everything I need. As for the person that made the previous comment, I'm not quite sure what you meant by certain consumer. I own my own business and most of the young proffesionals I know do shop at walmart.

I own a bakery and if walmart opened up right next to me, their bakery would not put me out of business because my product is far more superior. It is all how you run your business. Lowes and home depot don't seem to have a problem being right across the street from each other. I shop at both and they seem to be doing fine with the competition. Kmart has been a failing business for a long time so it won't be walmart's fault if they close.

Can someone share the roll call vote please?

English & Hernandez voted 'no'... All others voted 'yes'.
To stress something that has been discussed many times before but not in this article or comment string: the City Council cannot discriminate against a business based on its brand. The Council tried to stop Hooters from coming to Florissant. The City was sued and lost. The Council did the only thing they could: ensure the facility conforms to all city ordinances.

This is great! The only reason I don't shop Walmart is because I don't like the area of the one on West Florissant. I love shopping Target, but it will be great to have 2 stores to check out (I hate KMart and wont shop there). I am excited! When will this thing be completed?

What is Walmart going to be next too? I can't visualize. Yes it does bring a certain type of person into the area. Florissant has gone bad since the busing began. I agree with KWD

Brings a "certain type" of person, Wal-Mart "targets a "certain consumer", really people? I guess that the Supercenters in Chesterfield, Lake St. Louis, Wentzville, Warrenton, etc. also draw this so called element! All of the North County Upper Crust, Hoity Toity's will just have to continue shopping at the Big K and the Mighty T so that they avoid that "type" of consumer, wouldn't want them to come in contact with the "unwashed" masses!

Does anyone know when this development is supposed to start? If this Wal-Mart by THF reality is anything like the one THF developed in Chesterfield Valley this will be a nice addition to the area

You always hear about Wal-mart "bullying" their workers and how badly they treat them, but Wal-mart doesn't seem to have trouble finding help. Wal-mart is one of the nations largest employers, just stop and think how it would affect all of us if they closed up shop. If you don't like them, don't shop there.

I, too, am excited about this. The Walmart on W. Florissant has cleaned up it's act, but still too small and parking is stupid. Looked the address up on mapquest and looks like somewhere between Lowe's and Jamestown Mall (now THAT'S a thriving shopping area). I, for one, am GLAD it is in my back yard. KMart is regularly out of stuff and Target got just a little too expensive. Walmart is still the most reasonably priced place to shop. CAN'T WAIT....would like to know when construction will begin.
